"A Conspiracy at Kyffhauser" Download the MP3 >

king of kyffhauser
The Kyffhauser is a mountain located at the border of Thuringia. The mountain has significance in German traditional myth as the resting place of Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, a charismatic leader who died in 1190 while on a crusade.

According to legend, Barbarossa is not in fact dead, but sleeps in a hidden chamber underneath the Kyffhauser mountain, sitting at a stone table. His beard has supposedly grown so long over the centuries that it grew through the table. As in the similar legend of King Arthur, Barbarossa supposedly awaits his country's hour of greatest need, when he will emerge once again from under the mountain.

The presence of ravens circling the Kyffhauser summit is said to be a sign of Barbarossa's continuing presence.

This is some excellent material. Not just the music, but the written content is really worth the read.

In 1999, Greg Osby gave some of the best advise I have ever heard. He said (and I paraphrase, here), "Always keep a sketch book". By this, I gathered, he was refering to an audio diary, a chronology of music and creativity.

At that time, I had neither the inclination (I was young and too stupid to heed the advice) nor the resources (computers were not affordable to me and it is much easier to keep a diary when you have rocording equipment) to keep such a diary.

Today, however, I have the wisdom of years (heh) AND the basic recording equipment that enables me to immortalize these tidbits of musical memory. And so, I share them with the world.

A few disclaimers.....
I said "BASIC recording equipment" and I meant basic. I have a computer with a soundcard that creates a great deal of noise. These are not meant to be professional quality recordings..... so, yull have to deal.

Most of this is, unless otherwise noted, a single take of improvisation. very little, if any, is prepared. No practicing or rehearsing parts. Just the moment.
